Myanmar Stakeholder Meeting

On 9th October 2015, Myanmar Engineering Society (MES) hosted the 2nd stakeholder meeting at MES office in Yangon. There were 28 participants in the meeting which included representatives from Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry, Yangon Technological University, Myanmar Engineering Society, Renewable Energy Association Myanmar, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Electrical and Electronic Appliance retailers, Households personnel and MECON researchers.

In the meeting, Mr. Aung Thet Paing, MECON lead investigator from MES, presented the MECON project overview and key results of the research. The meeting also had a panel discussion where panelists discussed on possible energy efficiency policies and challenges.

The meeting offered a group discussion where the participants was divided into three groups and discussed upon the topics of 1) EE policy development and law enforcement, 2) Development of EE appliances Market, and 3) Public Awareness.

Most of the discussions were on energy efficiency policy package; including road map, implementing strategy, and action plan, approved by presidential office. Myanmar has not had an energy standard and regulation for electrical appliances yet, and so it should be prioritized as a national energy policy.

MECON project was the very first international research collaboration for MES, and it has pointed out the necessity of energy efficiency was essential to Myanmar. MES will continue conducting researches on raising consumer awareness, more data collection and surveys, and the design and development of energy efficiency policy in Myanmar.
